Get Legal. Photography Contracts and More
Don't get screwed using a bad contract, or by not having the proper legal forms in place. This class covers all contract must-haves. Beyond the contract, photographers need proper forms in place to protect themselves: model releases, second shooter agreements, copyright releases, print releases, and more and those will be discussed as well and samples will be provided to attendees. Contracts for both portrait and wedding photographers help educate their clients, set expectations, and create accountability for both photographers and clients, and this class will discuss how photographers can strengthen this key to communication.

Same-Sex Wedding Photography. Emerging Opportunities
With 19 states and the District of Columbia recognizing same-sex marriage and many more with marriage bans under appeal, recognition of full federal marriage equality is just around the corner. As a result, same-sex couples have represented one of the fastest growing segments in the wedding market. But wedding photography has until now been almost exclusively geared towards serving a man and a woman, and, contrary to popular belief, preparation for same-sex weddings can vary from opposite-sex weddings.  What works for Jack and Jill won't necessarily work for Jack and Michael, let alone Jill and Louise.

During this session, co-author of The New Art of Capturing Love: The Essential Guide to Lesbian and Gay Wedding Photography, photographer Thea Dodds, will share tips and techniques and will review the process from marketing through delivery to better serve all couples. Whether you are a new or veteran wedding photographer, this presentation will both instruct and inspire in its revelation of the nuances of this emerging market.

Rent-A-Human

What is Rent-A-Human? // This is our modeling and portfolio building program at the event. Since ShutterFest is a hands-on and shooting conference, we realized last year the need for lots and lots of models. This year, we will have over 100 models at the event across all different genres. Seniors, families, babies, glamour, weddings, portraits, etc.

How does it work? // More details will be availalbe at the event, but the quick version is this. There will be a rent-a-human station set up at the event. You will not, under any circumstances, be able to rent-a-human during the platform classes. Models will be listed on a board with their head-shot and their shooting category. You will sign up to work with a model in groups of 8. You will be able to take the models to the shooting bays or on-location for outdoor shooting. As a group, you will decide on your own.

Hair & Makeup // The Paul Mitchell School will be volunteering their time and resources to provide hair and makeup for the models to ensure your shoots are top-notch!

Wardrobe // We will also have a few local bridal shops that will be donating 40+ wedding dresses and bridesmaids dresses for you to use on your shoots! Models will be instructed to bring other outfits for their shoots, however, if you are looking for a stylized shoot, feel free to bring an outfit or two that you have been dying to shoot.

Models // We will have over 100+ models at the event. Check out the current confirmed models. Know someone who wants to model and build their portfolio? Have them register here.

Posing Two Brides
Limited Capacity seats available

With nearly half of the states in the US (and 13 countries) currently recognizing same-sex marriage or civil unions, these are exciting times for marriage equality.  Wedding photographers have a new, emerging clientele. But, until now, wedding poses have been almost exclusively geared towards serving a man and a woman.  Posing two brides is often different from posing a bride and groom.

During this class, the co-author of The New Art of Capturing Love: The Essential Guide to Lesbian and Gay Wedding Photography, photographer Thea Dodds will share tips, techniques and hands on skills to pose two brides.  We will have real same-sex couples for a live demonstration and opportunity for students to practice these new skills and create portfolio images.

Put Your Photography Business on Autopilot

Sponsored by Panasonic and H&H.
As photographers – are we spending too much time processing images and working on client issues? If you could actually get some time back, how would you use it? Relaxing with your family or maybe focus on marketing to grow your business. In order to get more time we need to find ways to streamline our workflows and automate them as much as possible by putting them on AUTOPILOT. I will demonstrate how to create efficient workflows for both your image processing and business. Many years in the aerospace industry taught me to be efficient and highly organized. I now apply the same principles to my photography business.

Some of the benefits of applying the AUTOPILOT principles include:

• Huge time-savings. What can you do with extra time?

• Shorter turnaround times which translates into a better client experience.

• Consistent output – images and products have the same look and feel.

• Business growth – more time to spend on marketing.

• Less Stress!!!

Items to be covered will include:

1. How to develop a solid workflow for your images and fine-tune it.

2. What software and tools you should be using for an automated workflow.

3. How you should be applying workflow to studio management and business.

4. Automation – what is it and how to get it.

5. Equipment considerations as they relate to workflow.

Selling Video – For the Photographer
Nobody wants to be sold to. Maybe you don't like interacting with people or some of you don't have enough time to leave the office to sell your services. Out of all the people I've interacted with on the road teaching the art of selling is the biggest problem for the vast majority of creatives. Sales is the one thing we struggle with as artists. You can be the greatest
photographer, filmmaker, or editor but if you can't sell your business will struggle and ultimately fail. I'm giving you my crash course in sales that flat out works. Clients have been beating down our door to work with us for years. We haven't had to cold call in a decade as our company is on pace to have yet another record year. You will learn how to engage with people,
create relationships, and communicate. Some of Switzerfilm's clients have invested hundreds of thousands of dollars with us over the last few years. You will leave this class understanding how easy it is to sell when you have the right approach. We don't like the word "sell" just like you. We Switzerfilm peeps genuinely care and invest all energy and effort to take care of
our clients and keep the good times coming for all.

Storytelling Adventure Shoot – Shooting St Louis
Limited Capacity full

Sponsored by Panasonic and H&H.
The skill set required to photograph travel are the same as wedding photography if you think about it – portraits, landscapes and details are all used to tell a story. Using these shooting skills we will embark on a St. Louis adventure cruising in and around the awe inspiring Union Station. Our goal will be to shoot images that capture the essence of St. Louis. Photographing travel locations can help sharpen your overall photographic skills and make you a better wedding and or portrait photographer.

As we become more mobile and travel - are we putting too much emphasis on the gear and not the experience? Regardless of where we are in the world – we want to capture awesome imagery while being in the moment and enjoying the experience.

Although we can use any camera to photograph with we will discuss the benefits of mirrorless cameras versus traditional DSLR’s

After visiting every continent except Antarctica and most of the United States, I have an appreciation for keeping it simple, while creating images that tell a story. I will share my experience from these voyages and discuss how to create photographs with impact using the latest camera technologies.

Items to be covered will include:

1. Comparison of DSLR’s versus the new mirrorless cameras

2. Equipment considerations – including lens selection and accessories.

3. Preparation - what to do before your adventure to increase the odds of capturing great photographs.

4. William’s top secrets for great travel images!

5. How to share your travel photos.

6. Easy postproduction – the finishing touches.

7. Actual hands on shooting session around our venue in St. Louis.
